Queensland Health recognises the value that skilled clinical professionals from overseas have in the workforce in terms of filling long-term vacancies where there is a shortage of candidates to add skills and experience.
To be eligible to practise in Queensland, you must meet the requirements of the relevant registration board/professional association for your occupation. To help reduce the turnaround time for your Visa application, some professionals may be eligible to apply for registration/membership before obtaining a position with Queensland Health.

If you are not an Australian Citizen or resident, you will need to apply for a visa in order to work in Queensland.
The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) provides a comprehensive overview of working in Queensland with information on residency visas and citizenship requirements. Please visit the DIAC website for further information.
The preferred visa for overseas staff employed by Queensland Health is the Temporary Business Long Stay Visa (Sub-class 457) which is valid for 4 years and also allows the applicant’s spouse or partner to work unlimited hours. Queensland Health can sponsor you as a temporary resident. We can also support you for permanent residency when you meet immigration requirements.
If the employer and employee are eligible and willing and able to meet their obligations under the visa, they can commence the 3-step application process, via DIAC.
| Step 1: | Employer applies to be a sponsor The employer must complete an application to become a sponsor. |
| Step 2: | Employer nominates a position The employer must nominate the position to be filled. |
| Step 3: | Employee applies for a Visa The employee must apply for a visa to be allowed to work in Austraila. |
Employer Nominated Scheme (ENS): The ENS enables Australian employers to recruit, on a permanent basis, highly skilled staff from overseas or temporary residents currently in Australia, when they have been unable to fill a vacancy from within the Australian labour market or through their own training programs.
Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS): The RSMS allows employers in regional or low population growth areas of Australia to fill skilled positions that they are unable to fill from the local labour market. Any employer can participate in the scheme as long as their business and the position being filled is in an area covered under the RSMS.
Further information can be found on the DIAC website.
Applicants for Australian citizenship must meet certain requirements. A person must have been present in Australia as a permanent resident for a total of two years in the last five years; including a total of 12 months in the two years immediately prior to application.
