Looking after your penis

It’s good to know what goes where, and what is what – check out the diagram of the male genitals below. The penis is the male sex organ consisting of the shaft, glans (head) and foreskin.

male genitals

The tube inside the penis is called the urethra, which carries urine from the bladder to outside the body.

The penis is used for passing urine and for sex. When aroused, the blood vessels in the penis fill rapidly with blood - this makes the penis grow larger and firmer. When the penis is stiff, a clear oily liquid may flow from the urethra. If stimulated enough, semen (a milky white liquid) will flow from the penis (this is called ‘ejaculation’). Sometimes, this can occur naturally when you’re asleep - this is called a ‘wet dream’.

Some guys are circumcised. This is when the foreskin has been removed for religious, cultural or medical reasons and is usually done when boys are babies. The removal of the foreskin doesn’t affect how the penis functions.
Keep your penis clean by washing every day. If the foreskin hasn’t been removed then it is a good idea to push it back to clean the head regularly especially in a hot climate.
