Painful testicles
There are several causes of pain in the testicles:
- Epididymo-orchitis – an infection of the testicle and epididymis often caused by gonorrhoea or chlamydia.
- Torsion of the testicle - where the testicle twists on its own blood supply and is at risk of dying due to lack of blood supply. If pain has come on suddenly, see the doctor as soon as possible as an operation can save the testicle. Torsion is more common in young men but can occur at any age.
- Testicular cancer- more information on early detection of testicular cancer can be found on the Queensland Cancer Fund website
- Trauma – such as sports injury or stain
What to do
If you are experiencing pain, see your local doctor, family planning clinic or sexual health clinic for advice.
