Pain during sex

Pain associated with sexually transmitted infections is most often experienced:

Generally the causes of pain during sex can be found and successfully treated. But sometimes, pain during sex is related to sexually transmitted infections or changes to the tissue cells of your cervix.

Pain during sex can be either during penetration or on the surface of the vulva and vaginal opening or it can be deep inside the vaginal and abdomen. Infection on the visible parts of the genitals, such as the soft skin outside the vagina (the vulva), may cause pain or irritation during sex and may be due to thrush or genital herpes. If you have pain inside your vagina or deep in your body during sex, it may be due to an STI such as chlamydia or gonorrhoea or some other condition.

What to do

If you are experiencing pain, see your local doctor, family planning clinic or sexual health clinic.
