Think you’ve got an infection?
If you’ve got an infection, you may experience some of the following symptoms:
- itching, sores, blisters or lumps inside and/or around the vagina or anus
- pain low in the tummy and/or during sex
- unusually heavy periods, bleeding between periods, or bleeding after sex
- unusual vaginal discharge
- frequent urge to pass urine and pain/burning when passing urine
- rectal pain/discharge
- NOTHING – there are no obvious signs or symptoms with some STIs.
Remember, these symptoms have many causes and do not necessarily mean you have an STI.
However, very often a person can have an STI without knowing it. A person with an STI may look perfectly healthy because the infection doesn’t cause obvious symptoms. While some infections appear to go away without treatment, they actually stay active in the body (eg. in the bloodstream). This can cause problems later, or can be passed on to other sexual partners.
