What happens at assessment

The majority of women who attend BreastScreen Queensland are never diagnosed with breast cancer. However, about 10 per cent of women are recalled after an appointment for further follow up. This is called "assessment''. It does not mean breast cancer has been found but it does mean further tests, such as extra mammograms, an ultrasound and/or biopsy, are required to determine whether breast changes are harmless or due to cancer. The tests are performed by a team of specialists, free, as part of the BreastScreen Queensland Program.
